Waverley Mile - Sainsbury's Sport Relief 2012

The Waverley Mile which took place on Sunday 25 March at Frensham Common was a complete sell-out with over 500 runners taking part. The event organised by Waverley Borough Council was enjoyed by a variety of people getting active to raise money for Sport Relief including seasoned runners and families with young children, many of whom were dressed for the occasion.

Entrants walked or ran in the one, three or six mile Sainsbury's Sport Relief Mile 2012 on a challenging course through the Common's heathland and woodland which featured deep sand and hills. The three and six mile fun run started at 10am while the one mile event began at 11am - both were officially started by Mayor of Waverley Councillor Richard Gates. Cllr Julia Potts who is responsible for Leisure and local councillors Cllr Stella Anderson-Payne and Cllr Jenny Else also supported the Waverley Mile.

The fun kicked off with a warm-up on the beach at Great Frensham Pond where grandparents, parents and toddlers alike limbered up before assembling at the start line. Volunteers lined the route ready to offer support and encouragement along with bottles of water donated by Sainsbury's Water Lane. Every participant on finishing the course was awarded a Sport Relief Mile medal and goody bag. DC Leisure, who manage Waverley's leisure centres offered free seven day passes, and balloons to the younger participants.

Cllr Julia Potts said: "We could not have wished for a better turn-out as the event was completely sold out online and we had more people signing up on the day. The weather was gorgeous and it was great to see families turn out to raise money for Sport Relief and have fun themselves."
