SurreySave Credit Union - ethical financial services

Launched on 1 February 2012, SurreySave Credit Union is a financial co-operative that offers a safe and easy way to save and access to loans at fair rates of interest. It aims to be the first choice for low cost, high quality ethical financial services serving all who live or work in Surrey.

SurreySave was started by a group of volunteers from Guildford, Mole Valley, Woking and Waverley. Most of its support came from councils, housing associations, charities and Legal & General.

About Credit Unions

Credit Unions are relatively new to Britain - their role was traditionally carried out by local building societies. When these were taken over by mainstream banks, British people lost access to community-owned and run financial services. But over the last decade, membership of the UK's 500 credit unions has tripled - and their savings and loans have quadrupled.

Credit unions are owned and controlled by their members. Profits are used to grow the business, or passed back to members as interest or dividends. They exist to help members help themselves, encouraging them to develop prudent financial habits and understand the true cost of credit. Whenever possible, they assist those who struggle to make ends meet, helping them up the ladder to financial health.

SurreySave is audited and reviewed by an independent and qualified supervisory committee, in line with Financial Services Authority  guidelines.
