Elaine_Bolt_woodlandvessels2The makers in this exhibition have previously been selected for the Crafts Council's prestigious Hothouse programme that offers support and mentoring for new makers wishing to break into the sector.

This is an opportunity to invest in the future of British crafts and to celebrate past Hothouse participants who have turned their passion for making into successful businesses.

The makers include: Aimee Bollu, Elaine Bolt, Charles Dedman, Tim Evershed, Stella Harding, Christina Hesford, Verity Howard, Emma Johnson, Catriona Mackenzie, Tina McLeod, Heather McDermott, Jode Pankhurst, Angie Parker, Lauren Taylor, Jessica Thorn, Theo Wright and Cristina Zani.

The New Ashgate Gallery is a Hothouse partner. Hothouse is a Crafts Council initiative where selected makers take part in the six-month programme which is delivered in partnership across four regions in the UK. It includes workshops, 1:1 mentoring and connects the maker to a national network of makers and organisations.

  • Janine Partington: Maker in Focus

    • Saturday, 28 July 2018 - Saturday, 8 September 2018
    • Location: New Ashgate Gallery, Farnham, Surrey
    • Cost: Free admission

Bristol-based designer-maker Janine Partington combines the traditional craft of enamelling with fresh, clean, contemporary designs in her latest showcase at the New Ashgate Gallery.

Grasses___Janine_Partington_2017___vitreous_enamel_on_copper_panel_1Enamelling is the art of fusing glass onto metal. Janine's work is created mainly using the technique of dusting powdered vitreous enamel over hand-cut stencils onto copper then fired at a temperature of 800°C.

As the metal cools, the true colours of the panel emerge. It takes multiple short firings to create a finished piece of work, and whilst her years of experience in mastering her skill can shape the outcome, so much of enamelling and the final artwork are left to the mercy of the material itself.

The New Ashgate Gallery is pleased to present Janine’s new collection of hand-carved leather; a bold new direction for Janine as a part of her recent MA studies which we’re delighted to show.

Janine takes inspiration from the shape of things around her. In particular she is inspired by trees, flowers, leaves and seed heads, their inherently graphic lines and shapes within. Exploiting the sensitive relationship between the copper and enamel is at the heart of her work. Janine is constantly playing with the materials, seeing where they can take her.

Enamel is a versatile, durable, strong and impervious material which is well-suited for every room in the home or workspace from kitchen to bathroom, from washroom to boardroom. The inherent qualities of the enamel, its sheen and interplay with light bring something new and very tactile into a living space.

The New Ashgate Gallery celebrates holidays by the coast and memories of carefree days away from our ever-connected world.

Artists have been painting seascapes for hundreds of years in order to capture the beauty of the natural world.

Seascapes speak a common language that we can all relate to; the endless horizon of the sea, sunset walks and the rhythmic sound of the waves. Long summer days, the quality of light and a bracing sea breeze inspires all of us with the feelings of possibility and perhaps it is this which we long for, once we return to normal life.

When you can’t visit the calmness and tranquillity of the sea in person, come to the haven of The New Ashgate Gallery.

We are delighted to bring together 9 artists and makers whose work encapsulates the positive feelings of enjoyment, calmness and refreshment.

This carefully-selected exhibition of work aims to evoke feelings of nostalgia and relaxation. These artists create work in a variety of disciplines, from ceramics to oil on canvas - all influenced by colour and the need to capture and interpret that holiday atmosphere.

An exhibition of work by Theo Brooks, Sigrun Hill, Jan Lewin-Cadogan, Alison Orchard, Alison Proctor, Isla Rose, Annabelle Shelton and Sonya Vine.
