    • Location: New Ashgate Gallery, Farnham, Surrey

The New Ashgate Gallery invites members of the public to come and vote for their favourite artist.

Ali_Tomlin__Narrow_necked_bottleThe Surrey Artist of the Year competition is a partnership between the New Ashgate and the Surrey Artists Open Studios to celebrate the wealth of creative talent in Surrey. Starting in 2009, this aspirational exhibition offers a collective of local quality arts and craft as voted for by the public during open studio visits. The top scoring artists come together for a programme of events.

There is a wide variety of artworks on show, all offering different materials and techniques: ceramics, glass, jewellery, painting, photography, printmaking, sculpture and woodwork. The shortlisted artists are Adam Aaronson, Joanne Alwyn, Naomi Beevers, Mary Branson, Alex Freeman, Emma Godden, Nikki Hearnshaw, Christine Hopkins, Su Jameson, Jule Mallett, Katie Netley, Alison Orchard and Ali Tomlin.

Again, during the exhibition, members of the public are encouraged to vote for an artist; and the artist with the most votes from public and judging panel, is named Surrey Artist of the Year 2017. The winner receives a bursary of £1,000 and a solo show. The competition is organised in partnership with the Surrey Open Studios. It is supported by the Patricia Baines Trust. Surrey Life magazine, which has a monthly section dedicated to the local art scene, is the official media partner of the competition. The season includes workshops for adults and artists.

Denise_Jaques___The_Pier_60cm_x_40cm_mixed_media_mosaicDenise Jaques is mixed media artist specialising in contemporary mosaics. She is the winner of Surrey Artist of the Year 2016 and is a member of BAMM (British Association for Modern Mosaics). Denise creates artwork for interior and exterior spaces. Her work has a strong sense of colour, pattern and rhythm, and plays with the idea of distorted reflections. She is fascinated with the journey of experimentation and excited by the unknown destination.

Her recent artwork relates to places she has lived and loved. Denise has created a series of abstract landscapes and seascapes inspired by the Surrey countryside, Essex coast, and beyond. She uses the reflective qualities of glass to capture the ever-changing light on the natural environment.

Denise also creates mosaics for exterior spaces. She has developed her craft to create fun, shimmering mosaic art for the garden. These pieces gently sway, projecting a scattering of ethereal reflections around the exterior space. If you would like to try mosaic making, contact the New Ashgate Gallery to book for Denise's workshops in the gallery.
