Maurice Byham and his wife, Mary, have lived in Bramley since 1977; they have two sons and five grandchildren. He is a member of the Parish Council, a bell ringer at Holy Trinity and a governor at Gosden House School. He runs with both Guildford and Surrey Hash House Harriers and enjoys cycling, swimming and diving.

Maurice was brought up and educated in Middlesex. He left school at 16 and continued his formal education and trade training in the Fleet Air Arm. Royal Naval service continued for 12 years in which time he specialised in air-sea rescue operations as aircrewman and rescue diver prior to being commissioned and undertaking helicopter flying training. On leaving the navy in 1968 he was actively involved in subsea operations in the North Sea oil and gas industry. This operational experience was later applied to sales and marketing activities with a number of operational and manufacturing companies. From 1995 to April 2005 he was Town Centre Manager in Guildford.

Maurice has been a Waverley Borough Councillor for Bramley ward since 1994, representing Busbridge and Hascombe as well since 2003 when the ward boundaries changed.  Maurice was Waverley Mayor in 2007/2008. He takes a strong interest in the environment and recycling, Waverley traffic and travel issues and affordable housing.
