Tony was born in Beckenham, Kent in 1937, the eldest son of an actuary.  He was educated at the City of London School and the Universities of Nottingham and Oxford where he studied statistics.

He was first elected to Godalming Town Council in 2003 and re-elected in 2007 and 2011.  He also won his seat on Waverley Borough Council in 2007 and was returned in 2011 unopposed.  He was Deputy Mayor for Waverley for 2011/12 and is now the Mayor of Waverley for 2012-13.

He has been married to Catherine for over 51 years, has two sons and seven grandchildren.  After spending a working life split between being a university lecturer and a management consultant, he moved in 1982 to Godalming to teach statistics at Charterhouse School.

His local interests include the friends of Oglethorpe, the Rotary Club of Godalming, the Godalming Band, the Parish Church of St Peter and St Paul and his a Patron of the Watts Gallery.  In his leisure time he enjoys fine wines, local history, painting in both oils and watercolour, and golf.  His favourite pastime, other than his grandchildren, is going out with his wife.

Tony Gordon Smith is currently Mayor of Waverley.
